How to Report an Absence

EDUC § 25.092. Minimum Attendance for Class Credit or Final Grade:

Students enrolled in school must attend class for 90% of the time it is offered to receive credit or a final grade.  The 90 % rule applies to all absences, including excused absences.

Regular and punctual attendance is extremely important to your child’s success in school. We encourage you to help your child develop these good habits. However, when absences or late arrivals are necessary, please do the following:

  • Call the Attendance line (915)877-7705to let us know of the absence or late arrival. If unable to reach the attendance clerk, please leave a brief message and state your child’s name, the date(s) of the absence and reason. (Absence note still required to be submitted to office).
  • Send an Email to the attendance clerk at [email protected]
  • School Messenger - Parent will receive an automated call when student is absent.
  • Parent Portal – Parents can keep track of their student’s attendance by signing-in to the parent portal.

Documentation after Absence:

  1. Upon arrival or return to school, student must bring a note signed by the parent that describes the reason for the absence.
  2. Student with more than 3 consecutive days absence due to personal illness must bring a doctor’s note or a health clinic verifying the illness or condition that caused the student’s extended absence from school.
  3. Upon return to school, student will need to see the school nurse for any restrictions and/or clearance to return to class.

Truancy

Research has proven that truancy, in most instances, leads to delinquency, drug involvement and dropping out of school. When students become truant, everybody loses; students lose the benefits of instruction and ultimately credit.

Consequences:

  • Attend less than 90% of class = loss of credit
  • At 3 or more unexcused absences a district truancy intervention will be initiated for student and parents.
  • If unexcused absences reach or exceed 10or more in a six month period, student and/or parent will be referred to Truancy Courtfor further intervention and monetary fines will be assessed.
